Our Curriculum
As a Classical, Christian school, Providence Classical Academy seeks to train students to love what is Good, True, and Beautiful and to prepare them for a life of service to God and their neighbor. We encourage the pursuit of virtue and excellence and initiate students into the history, ideas, literature, art, music, and culture of Western Civilization and the Christian tradition.
For our youngest students, we lay a solid foundation of good habits, basic skill work, and many wonderful tales. As our students grow, they begin to read history and study geography. In fourth grade, we add Latin, Shakespeare, Plutarch, grammar, and more. This is when their learning really begins to expand. The expansion continues throughout their time at Providence.
To prepare our curriculum, we draw on the work of organizations like AmblesideOnline, which helps us select the best books for our students, and companies like Math•U•See, which publishes a math curriculum that helps children understand the connection between abstract number and physical quantity.
Note: AmblesideOnline is a free homeschool curriculum that uses Charlotte Mason’s classically-based principles to prepare children for a life of rich relationships with everything around them: God, humanity, and the natural world. AO’s detailed schedules, time-tested methods, and extensive teacher resources allow parents to focus effectively on the unique needs of each child.
Memory Work
Memory work is an important part of our culture at Providence Classical Academy. TK-3rd grade memorize the Children’s Catechism, while our 4th-8th graders memorize the Westminster Shorter Catechism. Catechisms have been used since the Reformation to help believers understand their faith. All students are expected to learn the Call Out material in the download below.
All of our students also learn hymns and folks songs! (We take many of these from the AmblesideOnline list, but we adjust according to the needs of our community.
